6/23/2010 Two students on their own...

Mo and I met at Carl's at 5am on Wednesday. Unfortunately, Carl was still feeling drained from his last treatment. I could tell he desperately wanted to go but he sent Mo and I to continue the day's mission without him. Mo and I were both sad to go without our teacher as we headed to Annapolis for a 6:30am launch.

Mo took me straight to the wood wall where he and Ernie had fished the Friday before. The spot we fished is on the opposite side of the river from the USNA, near the mouth of the Severn River:

We dedicated ourselves to fishing with larger baits in an attempt to catch the largest perch...Boy did it work!

One of the day's catches:

...and another:

...and another. This one was the biggest of the day at 12.5":

...you get the idea:

The perch were all VERY big. Here is a nice 11" perch that I caught:

There was something weird about these perch. Not only were they all big but they all fought VERY hard! Mo and I figured they must  have been taking steroids. I thought almost every perch I caught was a striper when I first hooked them. We had several doubles, a 12.5 incher, and numerous 11 inchers!

We also got to see several rays cruising in the shallows. I almost cast to the first one, thinking it was a striper coming up to eat bait on the surface. Luckily Mo stopped me as we didn't want to spend all day trying to land a ray with an ultralight when there were perch to be caught. I had never seen rays like that, it was pretty cool.

We made several passes along the wood wall. Most of the perch were caught right up against the wood. After our third or fourth pass we decided to try another spot to get out of the waves that the wind had started to stir up. Unlike the first seawall, the second spot had no shade. We fished it for a few minutes before deciding to head back to Spa Creek.

Once back in Spa Creek, we stopped at a couple usual spots including an overhanging tree and the magic dock with a stump underneath. I believe we caught 2 or 3 more perch but nothing as big as we were catching out in the main river.

I also managed to catch a pretty big blue crab in Spa Creek!

By about 10ish the cooler was getting full and the sun was getting high so we decided to call it a day. Carl called to ask about our progress and Mo filled him in on the amount and size of perch we were catching. Carl repeated it in disbelief and his wife Lydia heard him and said that it must have been Carl who had been slowing our catch rates and not Mo as Carl and I had concluded after our last trip! Mo heard her say that and I think it made him feel better about Carl and I calling him out after our last trip!

Oh, and what was that old superstition about bananas?

The cooler at the end of the day:

Overall, we caught 46 JUMBO perch in around 2 hours of fishing. Not too shabby for two WP students without their teacher! Mo and I both kept saying how much we wished Carl was there to enjoy the big, hard fighting perch. Now we just need to take our teacher to this new spot so he can enjoy it as well!

we surely missed our teacher on this trip(mr. Miagee).  I know I have learned everything I know from Carl.  As Ernie always says Carl shows you the entire experience of fishing, starting from waking up the day of fishing.  Dan and I were greatful to know so much about white perch thanks to Carl.  Cant wait till next wednesday so we can do it again with Carl, Team White Perch will conquer.
love the white perch

Nice fish.  If only I could find them that size at Beaverdam.
