Father's Day in NJ

As some of you know, it's been a crazy year for me between a hectic work schedule, a couple of injuries and spending time fixing up the house getting it ready to sell. The result is that fishing had taken a back seat and I hadn't been out at all yet this year. I can't tell you how great it was to be able to get out with my son and my brother for an early Father's Day on Saturday afternoon.

We fished a lake in Northern NJ called lake Mohawk. It's about 3 miles long and a half a mile wide and only open to residents who own property on the lake. The lake has a healthy population of both largemouth and smallmouth and evidently has landlocked stripers in there to help control the white perch population though my brother has yet to hook one.

I've had my son out saltwater fishing on numerous occasions and of course we've caught panfish from various ponds but this was his first real shot bass fishing. He did great job and really got tuned in fishing a whacky rigged senko and a small swimbait. In spite of less than perfect conditions with wind and boat traffic, he managed to catch about 10 or 12 fish, mostly largemouths and a crappie and yellow perch thrown in for fun. I ended up with roughly the same number and had a couple of smallmouth in the mix. We had 2 better fish over 4 lb, one that my brother shared with my son and one that I got just before we quit in the dark. I got that one on a custom made wooden surface swimmer that a buddy of mine made.

In addition to having a great time with my son and brother, I'm finally motivated to dust off the kayak and start fishing locally again. Now if I can just find some time off of work....

Here's the pics.

Sounds like a great day on the water. Congrats to Ian on his first solo bass!

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!
