NHBA Chicahominy Lake tourney, 6-12-10, Day 1, Part 1 & 2

Launched at the lake at 0600....beautiful morning but slow fishing. Part 1 had us coming in for the weigh at noon. Anthony Vining came in 1st with 6.9 lbs. Charlie Taylor was 2nd with 6 lbs and it fell off after that. I caught one little guy.

It was hot.

Leg 2 started at 2PM and was to end at 8 PM but a storm chased us in at 5:30.

More later, I just found out we are going back out for the final 90 minutes.

The afternoon was something else! It was hot, no one wanted to go back out but we had another weigh in at 8 PM so off we went...way up the lake creeks looking for shade!

Charlie hooked a gar!

And I made him pose with it....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP1143.jpg

I took a yellow perch on an Orange Cream trick worm.....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP1144.jpg

...why would he eat that?

Then we got a call that a storm was moving in so i looked around and said "time to go". So we did....as fast as the boat could go. We looked back and the storm was catching up so Charlie put the hammer down and.....spun the prop! Crap....we are going to die! We could only manage 1200 RPM the rest of the way which equated to 6.5mph. Not very fast when all hell is about to break loose. We were looking for duck blinds...anything that would protect up.

We finally got to teh ramp in a torrential downpour. Lucky for me, I was the truck driver so I got the truck and backed up the trailer for Charlie to bring the boat in. he was soaked!

Anyway, the storm blew and the Tournament Director called the next shot...we have 90 more minutes to fish so back in teh water we go.

The calm after the storm...

Charlie caught one more fish about 10 minutes before weigh in as well as this little pickle!!

What a day!

Thanks for the report and pics Ernie, lots of familiar faces and boats.  It looks like a good turn out for a tx that far away.

Here is Charlie's report to the NHBA membership:

Things were not the same on the lake as they were last year. The water level was lower and the Duckweed was almost non-existent. In addition, the water was stained instead of clear. Overall the bite was quite iffy. A few bass were caught along with lots of pickerel. Saturday evening saw a thunderstorm roll through. In attempting to beat the storm to the Marina, Charlie spun a hub on his prop, dropping his top speed to 6.6 mph at 1600 rpm. After dropping off Ernie to get the truck, the sky fell out and everything got soaked. The boats were all loaded and refuge was taken in the Lakeside Restaurant until the sun came back out. The tournament continued until the 8:00 p.m. weigh in.

holy cow, that place looks great! I don't think I would have put down a jig. So many places to pitch too!

We never threw a jig....but lots of weighted plastics.

It was definitely a flipin' game!
