NHBA Tourney, Day 1- Leesylvania State Park

This was a "draw" tourney and I was paired up with Anthony Vining. I knew it was going to be a fun day as Anthony goes a mile a minute with the chatter....plus he is one very good fisherman, especially on the grass.

We stared off fishing some mud banks near Quantico. We could see some bait splashing around and before too long, I hooked in to a shortie (they had to be over 15" to keep) but the skunk was off. I was using a "Spike it" senko type worm (holagrific) on a circle hook. Then I tangled with a very nice one that caused Anthony to run for the net. I brought the fish to within 2' of the net and the knot gave way (between leader and braided line). It was extremely disheartening as this fish went seven pounds easy! Well...that's what we told everyone but it was every bit of three and then some. I was not happy but then again, I haven't changed that leader in quite a while.

A few minutes later, I managed to get a legal sized fish into the live well! Anthony had not caught a fish yet but that was about to change. You see, when we started, he declared that he was going to catch 200 fish. Based on the first 90 minutes, I doubted that proclamation.

He never worried.....

When the tide was right, Anthony motored us ac cross the river to his favorite grass beds near Marsh Island. It did not take long for him to de-skunk his side of the boat.

I’m not sure if by the end of the day he had 20 fish but he was real close. He totally schooled me on that grass bed. He used a horny toad followed by a home made horny toad look-alike, a fineness worm and a senko. He did well and caught 8 keepers with his best five totaling over 16 pounds. He lost a real nice one when his line broke as he tried to horse the bass out of the weeds. The same happened to me but it was a knot failure again. I don't like tying 10 lb flouro to 6 lb (diameter) braid. I need to get that figured out.

One thing new that I did today was to use a nail as a weight for the wacky worm.

Charlie Taylor and Tony Choi joined us on the grass.....

I ended up catching 7-8 fish with two keepers totaling 4+ pounds placing me near the bottom 1/3 or the group. Anthony had a top 3 finish.

It was a pleasure fishing with him....he knows his grass fishing!

Here are my two fish!

Dave Smith caught three snakeheads (9.6, 9.2 and 8.2 pounds).

The weigh in always cool...everyone gets to talk about where they caught their fish and how they caught 'em!

Nice.  So is day-2 tomorrow?  We may have to try some of the tactics you learned today in my boat down there this summer...........

Day 2 is tomorrow but I am not fishing it.

It's a straight shot from Leesylvania to the Mattawoman but crossing the Potomac from there could be dicey....

However, there are plenty of other places to fish without going to the big water.

Never a dull moment with Anthony: a great guy to fish with.  I like how he's not afraid to get the boat into areas most people would not even consider.

I bet he let you have it about those leader malfunctions the rest of the day.

Those snakeheads must have been fun, I got the tx results and Dave caught three over 8#'s!  edit *** I see you mentioned that already***

Yep...as in "you suck!" I must have heard that 20 times but after talking to a few of the other members, it seems that I was let off easy.

He is a great guy to fish with...lots of fun.
