5/10/2010 No high tide

Yesterday Carl and I tried to catch some white perch at Solomons. The forecast called for wind so we ruled out the Wicomico because it's a wide open river and can't be easily fished in the wind. We figured the sheltered coves of Solomons would be the easiest to fish.

We were wrong.

We launched the boat and immediately noticed there was less water than there should have been. It was shortly after low tide but even so, something was strange. We assumed that the wind had blown out water and kept the tide from coming back in. We fished around for a little bit but the wind made it very difficult to maintain boat position. We decided to try our luck at Annapolis since it was still early, believing that the shelter of Spa Creek would be easier to fish.

So we headed to Annapolis!

When we got to Annapolis there wasn't much water there either but we launched and fished the typical spots. I think we caught two fish but that might have been later. Either way, the fishing in Spa Creek was SLOW.

I wanted to check out Weems Creek so we motored out around the Naval Academy to be greeted by white caps on the Severn River. I turned the boat around to go back to Spa Creek but Carl said something that made me think we should at least try to go to Weems Creek even though we would have a rough ride. After motoring through the rough water (and shaking some of Carl's "fillings loose") we fished Weems Creek. Normally, I think we would have caught a bunch of fish and maybe even been able to cross pickerel off of my species list but the normal fishy spots were above water. I think we managed two more white perch but again, the fishing was SLOW! We decided to go try Spa Creek again, thinking the tide might have brought some more water in. At that point, we should have been approaching high tide.

The ride back to Spa Creek was much smoother. We stopped briefly at the rock wall at the USNA but nothing was biting. Back in Spa Creek, Carl suggested we fish a boat dock (one of the millions there) with a stump under it that has produced well in the past. Sure enough, we managed to catch a few fish. We quickly went from 4 perch to 10. Not a great day, but we certainly worked hard for them. The good news was that the fish we caught were pretty nice.

We fished a few more docks but couldn't manage any more fish. It was VERY difficult to maneuver around all the narrow dock spaces and pilings with the trolling motor. There were times when I had the trolling motor up to 50 and we still weren't moving any where! Driving a boat around fancy sailboats in wind like that is a little nerve wracking!

Around 5pm we decided to call an end to the long day. I met Carl at 5am and we had been fishing or driving all day long. There was no high tide at all. I don't think the water level rose at all throughout the duration of the day.

Carl has a couple years on me but he sure can wear me out!

Here are some pictures from the day:

Tomorrow: Back to Annapolis to try again! Hopefully there will be more water and less wind!
