So this weekend I learned that wind can suck but can also be used to your advantage!
Algonkian was horrible and quite possibly the worst conditions I've ever fish in a kayak.
Today, I had originally planned on going out to Beaverdam today but knowing how windy that place can get when its NOT supposed to be windy, I figured it wouldn't be smart to get out there with the wind advisory. I decided to go to a farm pond instead just to catch some fish and make up for yesterday. Got there at 9am and it was cold and windy. Before I put my kayak in, I pitched a jig to the spot where I'd be launching the kayak just in case there was a fish there. Turns out there was. Biggest one landed today for me. Don't know the weight but I'd guess 2.75lbs.
Did some exploring before I decided on a game plan. It was windy as hell so I decided to throw a spinnerbait at stuff that provided a break from the wind. Figured the bass would be waiting to ambush fish being pushed in by the wind. Turned out to be the right thing to do. Nailed a bunch of cookie cutter 1.5-2.5lbers. Did this all morning and had a few that looked and felt really good throw the hook. I tried ripping them to the kayak, playing them longer to wear them out and setting the hook harder but still lost a few. Couldn't figure how to keep the big ones buttoned up
Here are some pix.
Spinnerbait bite stopped around 1pm so I changed things up with a scrounger-flappin hog combo. A few of the fish above were on the scrounger and a few on a wild eye.
Around 3pm I hooked into something that felt like it'd be a new PB bass on the scrounger. It was taking drag and had my rod workin hard. I had to drop anchor so the wind wouldn't push me into the trees. The fish didn't feel right...it wouldn't come up...in my head I was thinking "dammit its a catfish". Sure enough, when it surfaced its ugly mug it was a 5.5lbs catfish.
Not a bad day in my book. Nothing huge but all but a few were keepers. I think I caught 20 today? Another positive is that I actually put stuff I've learned from others about fishing in the wind to actual practice and learned a lot from it.
Hope everyone caught some fish this weekend!
