May 28 (Friday) float

Looking to float the Upper Potomac or Shenandoah for smallies. Location undecided but figure on an all day float.

I have a canoe and a kayak to lend out....please let me know if there is any interest.

Back up plan if the river is high = Beaverdam Reservoir.

Put me down as a maybe.  I will be there if I end up not being able to go to Lake Gaston that weekend.

I was kinda looking forward to this one till I fished with Curly last week. That's a long stretch of river, especially if the wind and tide are wrong.

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

OK....we are a week (+1) away.

There is talk over on the TPFR board about a float on the Potomac (maybe in June). I posed two issues to them:

1. shuttling could be a PIA
2. the wind/current deal that Bob brought up

So...we should plan an UP float for the 28th and then I can fill you guys in if the Fletcher's to Gravelly (or Roosevelt Island) ever happens. I really don't want to be near DC on Memorial Day weekend.

Choices:

A. Lander to POR
B. Brunswick to Lander
C. Kephart (no shuttle, just stay in area as there is plenty of good water just upriver from the Goose)
D. Shenandoah (several choices)

Any others?

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

@ kepheardt, i have never fished much beneath the rapids.

would it be feasible to launch my jon and work down to the potomac, then be able to motor back to kep ?

I recognize there is a haul from parking to water's edge

Maybe the DC float is in order? The tide will be right and the weather should be decent.

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

There's always Beaverdam, Lake Anna etc.

The river (DC) might be below 4.5 by Friday. POR is at 6 right now....it needs to drop.

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

I'll play! Maybe we take my boat to Lake Anna or Cobb Island or.....

I did hear of a great report (1st hand) from Lake Anna last Saturday. Lots of stripers on metal jigs....the Specialized Baits kind....used by the owner of that company.

I do have a feeling that the rivers may not be up to kayaking standards (for fishing anyway).

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

And from the horse's mouth: I have been waiting a long time for a day (5/21) like that on LKA. It was perfect from start to finish. We were into the stripers for 2-3 hours in the morning. Not quite like on the Bay where you hook up every other cast, but we were jigging nice 6lb fish out of 30 to 40 feet with metal. Chris used a silver 7/8oz. toothache spoon and I used a 1oz. pearl Li'l Bunker. I think that we each caught about the same number of fish. Probably 10 to 12 each. Again, not quite like the Bay, but a great day on LKA.

No more watching....time to get involved! So far, it looks like you, me, Jeff and maybe Charlie.

Do we yak it around somewhere? Or do we take my boat somewhere (like Lake Anna)?

I need some opinions!!

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

Holiday weekend on lake Anna Might be crazy. Trafic will start building on Thursday.

I can't get the prediction site up, but i think the river will be below 4

I say Bruinswick to lander or Lander to point of rocks or Algonkian to riverbend, the last one might have class two rapids by the breaks in high water. (fine with my yak) It is only one little section that you need to pay attention to, people go down there all the time.

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

Forget Anna! POR is at 4 right now so it will drop by Friday.

I agree with Jeff, let's hit the UP! My vote right now is Algonkian to Riverend. Never done that one before. Bob knows where Algonkian is. I wonder if Charlie will be able to do it on his boat? I have an extra yak (unless Jeff wants it).

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

Algonkian to RB looks to be 8 - 9 miles. Does that sound about right? Anything tricky about the river? Last I saw there's a chance of showers, but a little rain might feel good. How early?

Re: May 28 (Friday) float

Don't know a thing about A to RB but some of the guys from the smallie club did the float on the 15th. I will see them tonight.

How early you want to go?
