As I had mentioned in a post earlier, today I attended the Mark Kovach (http://www.mkfs.com/) Advanced Fly Fishing School which he holds at the Hilltop Manor Hotel (on the hill looking over the Potomac River) in Harpers Ferry WV.
I had won this class at a CCA auction this winter.
We met at the Inn at 8:30 AM and we went non stop until almost 8 PM. I will explain it all but this guy gives you an incredible day (bargain)! I worked my tail off but what a great day!!
There were only three of us in his class which meant lots of one on one. Mark started with a lecture that covered fly casting techniques. I had NO idea there was so much to this but he simplifies things and uses lots of metaphors to make sure the students are getting it. I was glued to his words!
Around 11 AM we went to a grassy filed so we could show him our casting style. Yes….Mark spent lots of time with me; breaking down my cast…..I have a loooooong way to go! He was videotaping the event.
At 1:30, we broke for lunch (we needed the rest!) and then we got to se our casts …..not a pretty picture. Just when you think you are getting good at fly casting, you come back down to earth after watching yourself on TV. Mark video taped me four different times. The good thing was that I did make improvement!
After the casting critique, we waded down to the river (by way of the railroad tracks)
and started wading in the Potomac….very refreshing! I got to use quite a bit of what I learned which was a good thing.
All told, I caught 4 smallies on the fly rod as well as a nice blue gill.
I didn’t take pictures of the smallies because I was in fairly fast moving water and I was nervous about dropping the camera.
Mark is a great teacher and an equally great caster.
We got off the water after almost 12 hours of fishing and learning….unbelievable. By the way, all four fishermen were casting Mancini (http://www.eastcoastfisherman.com) 7 wt rods.
Great school, great day but soooooooooo much to remember!

I thought I was an Okay fly caster until I took a lesson. I couldn't cast ten feet while the guide was telling me what to do, too much thinking. It gave me new appreciation for my tennis students.
Sounds like you had a great day.
