A of ABC 1/6/10

Since it was a balmy 26 degrees at 5 am on my way to the gym I stopped by Adler for a few quick casts. I started out with a buzzbait figuring that the warm temps would have them a little more active. The problem was this film of something on the water wouldn't let the bait penetrate the surface. I decided to switch over to a purple worm with a 1/2 oz steel bullet sinker and still had the same issue. I'm not sure what this "film" is, but it was cold to the touch and very hard. I hope it goes away soon.

How do you even know if you got a hit?

Those bass may have been knockin' their noggins on that film....great post!

Hilarious - the film is a mysterious space compound that creates a smooth and sometimes glistening surface on top of the water. It is rumored during this period that the fish examine the world outside of water, through the valuable and safe barrier, to better understand the bi-ped inhabitants occupying the dryer spaces.

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

That film is applied to Ashburn lakes to keep snow from melting. You AV guys should rush out Friday morning to make snow angels on the lakes to give the joggers something to wonder about.

I am getting real itchy to go fishing.. Real itchy. Ponds are frozen, lakes, parts of the river, creeks etc. sad, sad days..  No good football on TV. What fun things are there to do.

I think I'm going to try to get to 4-Mile Run tomorrow since that's still clear.  Trying to get my step-bro to go too.

Re: A of ABC 1/6/10

Ernie, I have been looking through some old pictures of us fishing. I'm holding one of us fishing in the mouth of Goose Creek, next to a blow-down tree, catching crappie. If memory serves me correctly, we were both sharing a two foot square spot of unfrozen water; you were on the left side of the log catching the fish while I was on the right side not catching the fish. From the looks of our wardrobe, it was not a balmy day! I do remember the clinking of ice, on the side of the boat, as I motored across from Edward's Ferry!

Carl- let me bring back the memory. This may have been in November of 1989. My son Dave was 3 years old and we had put in at Algonkian and motored up. As you can see, he was not a happy camper.

You and the Doc put in at Edwards Ferry and when we got to the mouth of Goose, we were breaking ice in the early AM but it did not form..

We caught a few crappie that day, all for that section you described.

You are lucky that I don't have a picture of you from when you were a "yute"!

There are only a few open spots....not worth it in my book. I have not tested the ice but it is still holding the clementine that I threw out there a few days ago.
