Potomac 11/29/09

Launched out of Leesylvania Sunday morning, hoping to find some willing striper or bass. Water temps were in the low 40's in the AM, but got up to 50 by midday in the creeks. Main river water was slightly stained and the creeks were muddy from the recent rains. We fished in and around Powell's, Quantico and Chopawomsic Creeks, as well as a couple of main-river points and sandbars. We threw jigs, grubs, small crankbaits and jigging spoons with no luck. Marked plenty of fish and bait suspended in the bottom third of the water column, but just could not get them to bite. We did spook a few big bass in the creeks that were probably up sunning, but could not get any of those suckers to bite. I had an enormous fish on for a few moments, probably a large cat, but he got off before we got a look at him. He ate a 1 oz. spoon off the end of a deep point. Not much action for us, but still a nice little day on the river. Glad to get out there and get a bit of sunburn on my face one more time before the long winter sets in.
