Oct. 12 White Perch excursion #2

I met up with Carl on Monday morning to see if we could catch some more feisty white perch. We drove out to the Wicomico and stopped for a delicious breakfast sandwich at a local deli/market. This area is a definite change in scenery from the sailboats and high brow residents of Annapolis. To be honest, I think I prefer the rural, quiet surroundings to the constant boater-to-boater waving and traffic of Spa Creek. Not having to dodge Navy boats was an added bonus!

Carl showed me quite a few WP spots and we quickly caught a bunch of perch. I don't remember the total count but most of the fish were too little to keep for fillets. I think we ended up with 8 or 9 keepers that are resting comfortably in my freezer awaiting a Bisquick bath and a pan of hot oil. We also managed to catch quite a few small rockfish, especially Carl who managed to land a nice 16.5 incher. We also managed to see a few peacocks at a quirky property on a secluded island that we decided must be owned by an eccentric writer.

It was a pretty chilly day and I'm glad that Carl keeps some very warm clothing on board his boat. We only saw one other boat on the water. On the way home, Carl treated me to a delicious pulled pork sandwich and bread pudding.

Overall, it was another great day on the water with the White Perch master. I also heard a very funny story that happened at Wicomico involving Ernie and a malfunctioning fish basket...an added bonus of fishing with Carl.

Tomorrow we are off to try our hands at crappie on the Occoquan Reservoir. Hopefully we'll be able to manage some bass as well.
