6-18-07, Shenandoah River report

Where do I start?

Paul Kordon, Kent Williams and I fished the Shenandoah River from Lockes to the Rt. 7 bridge, a distance of about 5 miles. Originally, we thought it was a 3-3.5 mile float, more on that later.

We met at the Purcelville Dinner at 7 AM for some good eats and we got down to to the water by 8:30 AM. We had a canoe for Paul and Kent and a kayak for me so we started to get all the gear off the cars and we get ready for the float! But wait.....where are the kayak paddles?? At home!!! What a ......!  I had to call Debbie and beg her to meet me in Leesburg to do a hand off. I will pay dearly for that later.

Finally, at 10:15 AM we start the float. Kent Williams is the pastor of my church and he was very undersatning about my loss of memory!

Once afloat, both Kent and Paul start catching smallies and blue gills! They were spin fishing and I stuck to fly fishing. Not long after I started down, I caught a very nice blue gill. I thought to myself that this might be a good sign! The 'doah blue gills look different to me

Did I mention it was hot today? I heard it got around 95 but we never felt it as we spent time wading to keep cool. Here, Kent has a nice battle with a feisty blue gill.

Earlier, Paul had caught a very nice 1.5 lb smallie and then he lost a big one that jumped and shook the hook. But he persisted and caught a nice 2 pounder in a deep hole just before we had to call it a day.

The reason we had to call it a day, is that Kent had to get back to do a video skit and there was a camera crew waiting at my house. The problem was that we were no where near the Rt. 7 Bridge (we kept thinking it was just around the corner). So we decided we better paddle back so we can get going. Forty five minutes later, we made it to the boat ramp. My plan was to get home fairly early and get a workout in but that got taken care of on the river. I paddled more than I ever have and I am sure I will have sore arms and shoulders in the morning. The weights can wait!

Once we got back to my house, we fished again so that Kent could do his skit. The picture below will give you a clue as to what it might be but you'll need to come to Christian Fellowship Church in Ashburn on Sunday to see the skit in its entirety.

We had a great day on the water, we (mostly Kent and Paul) caught lots of fish including two nice smallies and we got a bonus of some great exercise.

I am ready for bed!

At least I had a paddle! It was still a great day despite of the goofiness!

ernie - thats the exact reason I had two paddle to go with my kayak - i left the house one morning, got to the put in and realized I aint got no way to propel myself down this here river.
off to gander mtn i went and picked up another.  had i been thinking, I would have gotten one that would fit inside the hatch as a spare that would always be there.

I may look for one that will fit in the hatch. Being 55, I may sometimes forget. Heck, you forgot and you were less that 1/2 my age!

Regardless, it was a nice float that I will do again. It was nice to see Paul catch those bigger smallies!

I need to get a new seat for the yak (more support for the back). Any suggestions?
