9-18-09, Eastern Bay report

Today, I had the pleasure of fishing with Capt. Gary Neitsey on his 24' Pathfinder. The other two crew members were Rob Allen and Tony Hughey.

This trip was originally scheduled for last week but we got blown out. It almost happened again.

Since it was a bit brisk in the AM, we decided to try some top water fishing at the mouth of one of the many rivers that flow into Eastern Bay. The 1st one we picked was the Wye River. All conditions looked favorable but we left the 1st hole with a big fat ZERO.....

We then went inside a bit to get away from the wavy water and there, I was lucky to score 1st...

....with a nice 20+" striper on a Stillwater Smack It lure. I love the top water bite! I was fortunate to catch another one on top as did Rob.

Capt. Gary works with a couple of other guides and they were out on the main bay getting pounded and only catching a few fish so we decided to stay in the calm river and hunt for some more stripers. Here is Rob with a nice tussle.....

.....and he lands a nice one on a Li'l Jimy (his favorite lure).

Since one angler was throwing a popper on top with the fly (Tony) and Rob was throwing the Li'l Jimy, the Capt. suggested that I throw this YoZuri,  nice way to catch a fish!

Right before we left to go out on to the bay (we got a call that things had calmed down), Gary called the owner of this nice house......

....to see if he was home (maybe we could get a lunch invite). But...he was not home so out to the bay we went....but not before I caught a 10" white perch! Check out the lure size!

I also caught a small one on the fly rod!

We did go chasing fish out on the bay and we caught a few blues as well as a dozen stripers but they did not have any size to them. Just like a few weeks ago, the fish would come up for 30 seconds or so and as soon as you threw your lure, there were gone. This was very frustrating to say the least.

I think we made a good day out of some tough conditions (flood tide and wind) plus we had a good time and learned a few new spots to try in the future. Tony caught blues and stripers on the fly so he was happy. Rob caught about 20 fish in total so he was happy. I caught fish on top and jigging so i was happy. What's not to like?

I recommend fishing with Capt. Gary Neitsey.
