9-5-09, Weems Creek (Annapolis) MD

Well...it happened again! I get up on Carl and he goes for the knife!

Anyway, let me tell you more about today. Carl has been fishing Weems Creek for almost 40 years. In all of the years we have fished together, he had never invited me to fish there....until today. We met up at his house at 0430 and went  on down the road. The launch area is on Spa Creek which flows into the Severn River. As motor on this water, you get treated to incredibly beautiful homes....

As well, you pass right by the US Naval Academy.

Quite a sight seeing adventure before the fishing starts. OK, now for the fishing!
Carl starts off by catching a few perch and  a striper to go up 4-0!

He also hooked into a nice pickerel that jumped out of the water and spits the jig...quite a spectacle! He continues catching at a nice pace but I stay right with him.

These perch were all big and strong. Bigger than anywhere else I have ever fished for them. Out of the 79 total WP we caught, we only threw back 17 of them....unheard of! As we were finishing the day, Carl hooked a nice pickerel.....

.....for all of us to see. I think I will target these creatures when the weather chills.

Now, why did I get bloodied up? You see, Carl had a nice lead for most of the day and then I got hot...so hot that I took the lead and he was not happy. You know the rest of the story. Of course, at the end, he won by a margin of 44-38. I was really impressed by the quality of the WP in this creek. They hit and fight hard and they have broad shoulders which makes for some nice fillets. And furthermore, it's closer than the Wicomico and Solomons!

For the 1st time in a few years,  I took a few perch home....nice and fat ones!

Yes, they were very tasty and I will have two more meals from the batch.

Time to go fishin' again!

Re: 9-5-09, Weems Creek (Annapolis) MD

Over the years, I have tried to interest guys in fishing because I think it is such a fun and rewarding sport. Ernie is, by far, my most successful endeavor. I am simply an old river rat who does not venture out from what I have been doing for years.

Ernie has carried my elementary tutelage to a whole new level! When Ernie says that I caught more fish than him, he fails to mention why this happens. Ernie does not get as many casts in the contest as I do because he constantly changes lures to try new stuff! He has about a zillion different configurations of grubs and spinners!

Yesterday he was using a Loomis rod which was worth about as much as my boat and was the size if a pencil!! How he caught those big perch was a credit to his casting skill and ability to "play" the fish. He was using four pound mono while I was using braid that could be used to tow my truck. If he had been using my same set-up the final count would not have been the same.

Now, I'm working on a new student. If Mo stays the course, he will be my new success story!
