NHBA Leesylvania Tournament - August 26, 2009

Fished a club tournament out of Leesylvania State Park. Headed for a railroad bridge in a creek and fished the last hour of the outgoing tide and the first hour of the incoming tide. Throwing a 5" weightless, June Bug Yum Dinger on 10# line, we managed to catch over 20 13" cookie cutter fish during the period. Also lost 4 and had one non-keeper.

Left there and headed for Mattawoman Creek, where we fished the channel going into Smallwood State Park. This channel is normally good on the incoming tide. Wednesday was different. The fish were hunkered down in the thickest grass mats in the entire bed. We cast the same Yum Dingers as far as we could cast them and managed to continue to catch fish. We lost a good number that buried into the grass and pulled off the hook, but we still had the fight. We didn't much care as we both already had limits and we were fishing for fun.  Probably caught about 10 from this grass bed.

When the bite stopped there, we packed up and headed for Chickamuxen Creek, where we pulled out spinnerbaits and worked the outside edges of the grass mats. Kept on catching fish, using 1/4 oz. white spinnerbaits with gold blades. Tried the Yum Dinger and Texas rig and could not entice one to bite. Went back to the spinnerbait and started catching again. Perhaps 8 more bass here before heading back to the park for weighin.

Tournament was won with 13.0 pounds, caught in Mattawoman grass bed on blue fleck power worms. Limit included a 5.6# lunker.
