5-28-07, Floating the South Fork of the Shenandoah on a yak!

Today was my 1st venture to a river on my 13' kayak. I met Josh Turner and Herschel Finch at Josh's house which is about 12 miles south of Front Royal. Herschel was in a sit in kayak.....

.....I was in my sit on top kayak.....

.....and Josh was in his pontoon.....

It was a beautiful day for this 3 mile float. We all caught a few small smallies (less than 10") but they gave us nice fights.

Here is one of them.......

About 1/2 way into the trip, I got a nice hit and a big fight ensued. It was a bigger fish but it was not behaving like a small mouth bass. After a brief fight, I brought him yak side and it was a horsehead sucker!!

Ugly!!

Josh and Herschel used both spinning and casting gear while I stayed with the fly rod (6 wt) for 90% of the time.

Anyway, I was pleased with this 1st outing and I got more familiar with handling the kayak. Even got to shoot some very tame rapids.....pretty cool!

VERY NICE !

How was the water level? Did you have to get out and portage at all?

Water level was low but fine, I never had to get out unless I wanted too. I was surprised at the lack of fish, saw very few.....and no blue gills!

I remember it got a little skinny after the park, but that when the fishing picked up.
