5-25-07, Potomac River (DC) report

Curly (John Casale), Jumping Jasper (Jeff English) and I left Ashburn at 4 AM to get an early start up above the Fletcher's area in the DC part of the Potomac River.

It was a beautiful morning and we were fishing by 5:45 AM. Although the tide was on it's way out (low was at 9:30), we had high expectations for the day. It didn't take long and we had the skunk off t e boat with herring, white perch and channel cats. But it was stripers that we came after.

While John was using the sabiki rig for herring, he got a huge pull which ended up to be a fat carp that got off before I could snap a photo.

It all starts with needing to catch herring and that we did. Here is Jeff with a double (one of these babies would later catch a striper).

After a while, we got a nice hit and proceeded to bring up this ugly ole flat head catfish.

Then another hit puts Curly in a fighting mood!

Since I had not had much luck with stripers this year, they let me reel this one in.....a nice 23" fish!

One of the highlights of the day was finding this "Cuban fishing rod". This is a device, carved of wood, that my cousins use to hand line fish.

Towards the end of the day, Jeff landed the big fish of the day.....a nice big blue cat.

All told we caught a bunch (40+) of herring, a dozen teeny white perch, 15+ catfish (flat head, Channel a& blue), 1 carp and 6 stripers. I would say that is a good day and we all certainly had a blast.

After a safety check by the DC Harbor police (we passed in flying colors), we called it a day at 1:30 PM before all the crazies got out on the water.
