Hot Saturday Report

Bright sun and high tide required some unusual tactics this evening. And with the excellent crew I had it was a great evening. Highlights where two doubles and a snakehead that just could not commit to a spro frog. These guys can cast hitting pie plate targets at will. I will just post pics now. Enjoy.

Thanks a ton Capt Mike! I had a blast!

If any of you guys haven't had the opportunity to fish with Capt. Mike you NEED to do it sometime. He is a wealth of information--about fish and marsupials

Re: Hot Saturday Report

So here it goes!

Dan and I met up with Capt. Mike at Slavin's Ramp (Indian Head) at 3 PM for a tailgate party. We had cold Gatorades and some of the best BBQ chicken and ribs you can get. One of the neat things about this trip is how Capt. Mike sets up the trip....gets you relaxed before getting on the water.

Finally it was time and we jumped in his jet boat and headed up the Mattawoman Creek...way back....past where anyone else fishes. He even had to use a push pole at times. Very cool!

While I wanted to fly fish, he ordered me to throw a top water hard plastic. Dan also threw a top water wiggleydohicky. Now remember, it's about 4 PM and the sun is up with little to no cloud cover. Our targets were small pockets of shade on the edge of the pads.

I had a couple of blowups and missed fish (strike three, I think) but Dan caught the 1st one....I matched it a few minutes later. We basically kept this up the whole time. At times, we wanted to perhaps use a jig or worm but mike sold us on the idea of catching top water fish in broad daylight. That was the right thing to do!!

After a bit, Dan changed to hid now found love....the frog! He hammered away at some nice bass as I tried to keep up with him....but he started to put 1-2 fish between us! It was neat to see the fish inhale the frog from way back in the cover.

At one point, Dan had something follow his bait that got all of our attention. As we watched, we saw a nice snakehead looking at Dan's frog. A twitch and a lunge! Finally, the snakehead turned and it looked like a greyhound bus rolling away. The fish took off for the shallows never to be seen again. That was one of the coolest moments I have ever seen in all my years of fishing!!

Capt. Mike announced that it was time for the fly rod and I had the Waldorf hair bug in the water in no time. I had a few hits and lost the 1st hookup. I made an incredibly lucky cast about 2 feet back from the edge and a nice bass smacked me hard. Now, I had to wrestle it away from the spatterdock....mission accomplished! I caught a second one before darkness too  me away from the game.

It was nice watching Dan and Capt. Mike dialogue on fishing. Being a recent college graduate, Dan soaked up every bit of advice that Capt. Mike offered. It was neat to see Dan apply the theory and make it happen seconds after the lesson. Much sage advice was given...and received.

The most important lesson was when Capt. Mike had us bring our lines in and told us that he was about to tell us a very valuable and important secret. We intently listed as the good Capt. started to tell us the tale. Here it is, "NEVER put your hand in the pouch of the kangaroo".  In a million years, I would have guessed that he would tell us such a sage line. all I know is that we laughed our heads off as he described the rank smell that followed him around after his "pouch" incident.

This was a great trip and we ended up with 21 quality bass. Dan caught 10, I caught 8 and Capt. Mike caught 3 as he showed us how to work the Owner top water wiggleydohicky.

Re: Hot Saturday Report

hey Mike, I found some Zippin' Ziggys on the web. They are branded as "Cultiva" Zip'N Ziggys by Owner. I am not sure if they are the same as the one you had, but I thought I'd post the link...
