7-16-09 OBX Gulf Stream Dolphin Fishing

So as my graduation gift from my parents I went on my first off seas charter.  We boarded the Carolina Girl at 5 45am.  Our captain was Capt. Derek Taylor.  We headed to the Gulf Stream and it took about an hour and a half.  The first mate, Thelbem, taught us how to use the bailer rods.  These rods are smaller high profile baitcasters with a small weight and live bait attached to them.  When ever they yelled "get the bailers out" we were to all grab one and start stripping line out.  Before the trolling rods even got out they saw jumping dolphin so we put the bailers out (6 of us were fishing these off the back at the same time).  We all caught tons of fish.  We would then troll for a while and when we got a hit we put the bailers out and would circle back around to the spot and catch tons.  We would do this over and over again.  We caught tons of fish.  Then we trolled for a couple hours for sailfish and wahoo without anything.  We did however have two doplphin, one of which I reeled in.  We ended up with our limit, 60, at the end, with over 50 caught in the first two hours of fishing.  We were back at the marina a little after 4.  It ended up being a great day.  I reeled in over 15 or 20 of the fish, because the rest of the crew consisted of a 7th grader, three old men, and my dad.  Most of them did not really know what they were doing(got yelled at a lot) so I would reel in more fish on the bailer then them which was pretty cool.

I don't like my meat breaded, but I am sure it would be good on a bun with mustard.  I am also going to try what the first mate told me.  Marinate it in italian dressing for 4-5 hrs and then grill it.  I usually just eat my fish with no seasoning, just the taste of fish and charcoal which is hard to beat!

Mash it up into mush meal and suck it through a straw!

How is your mouth feeling?

It feels fine I just have to eat everything with a spoon and no chewing for a week even though I feel good which stinks.

Try a little salt, pepper, and olive oil...simple, but great without detracting from the wonderful fish taste.

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!
