7-19-09, Upper Potomac River float

The final count of floaters was five: I used my kayak, Wes was in my other kayak, Charlie was in his home made boat and Kent & Gabe were in my canoe.

We had a good time but looking back, that stretch of the river got hammered over the weekend! Not only did it get fished hard but it got played on hard as evidenced by the amount of folks at both ramps when we got there at 3:30.

In the future, we will stick to Fridays....the calm before the storm. roll

Anyway, everyone caught fish and that's good. Charlie will be posting up a nice catfish that gave him a run for his money. It was cool to watch Charlie handle the wooden boat throught the rocks and rapids....I think he made it through without a scratch.

Kent was the high totals man, he caught 15 or so fish (mix of smallies and sunnies) on a hard swim bait. I don't know if he ever changed rules. I know Gabe caught a few smallies but I don't remember his totals. But I do remember that he spend most of his time in the water....the man had a good time!big_smile

Wes got used to my kayak easily enough...at one point, he was standing up and casting. Must be nice to be young! He caught 8-9 fish, most of them were smallies. At one point, he was talking to them....trying to coax them to hit his offering.

Me? Had it not been for the last 30 minutes......anyway, I caught a 10" smallie (on a tube) right up in front of the ramp....we are headed for a good day, so I said to myself.  About an hour later I caught #2 (on a whacky worm) and an hour after that I caught #3 (on a grub)! Good heavens, I have lost my touch!!!tongue

As ususl, I lost a nice one but I never saw it. I was floating down towards a big rock and there was some nice push water so I threw my tube and got a great hit. The fish took off right of the rock and I was headed left of the rock with the current.  Plus, I was going sideways which meant I needed to correct my angle while at the same time fight the fish. No contest here....fish won and I averted being tossed in the water.

I will add pictures later.

I had a smallie, a bluegill, and a catfish.  I have never been this high on the river before.  It was really beautiful.

Here is the cat.
