VA Beach Tuna Tournament on the Blue Dragon

I went down to fish the VA Beach Tuna Tournament.  It was 3 days and we chose the 2nd day of the tournament to fish.  Met at the dock at 4:00 am to get ready and headed out for a 7:30 lines in.  We went out on the Blue Dragon, captained by Mike Beane with my cousin, Jared as the mate (also the captain of the Hold Fast, another Va Beach charter boat), the anglers were me, Pete, Bruce , and Greg.  The winds were blowing 20 + knots on the way out, good thing we were in a 43' post.  We had our first knock down about 10 minutes into trolling but it didn't come tight.  Had a few more short strikes and knock downs when at about 1030, it was game on.  Bruce ended up in the chair for about 45 minutes before Jared got his hands on the leader and we got the gaffs in the fish.  It was a 67" bluefin tuna.

We got our lines back out with a little different spread to target some smaller fish.  Next knockdown put Pete in the chair and we got the gaff in a 20 lb dolphin.  Then it was my turn on the wwb line.  Had 300+ yards out before the strike.  After about a 10 minute fight, we got the bluefin into the boat.  After that we headed back to the weigh ins.  We had 176 lbs for the 2 bluefin and slipped into second place.  The fish went 138 and 38 lbs.

The next day was the last day of the tournament and instead of sitting around waiting we headed back out to do some amberjack fishing.  I'll put up another report on that soon.  Unfortunately our weight didn't stick and we slipped to a 3rd place finish out of 92 boats fishing.  All in all, it was a great time fishing, we caught some fish, won some money, and got some darn good fish for dinner.
