Occoquan Reservoir 7/5/09

Launched out of Fountainhead at noon yesterday and fished uplake from the park past Ryan's dam to the first bend. Nice overcast day with a bit of rain, but not too wet. We caught 10 bass in 6 hours, the biggest about 2.5 lbs. Spinnerbaits, flukes and topwaters worked well. Most fish came off the sides of points or grass edges near submerged wood. Another tournament yesterday, apparently they have them there every other weekend. For the most part these guys are really nice. Unfortunately we ran into a couple of them that were pretty rude, cutting us off and then taking off quickly, pushing big wakes at us. Wish these guys would be as respectful to us as we are to them...anyhow, other than that a nice little day on the water. We caught a couple interesting looking fish. One had a big old scar on his back like he had gotten picked up by a heron when he was a baby. Another one we caught had an old hook in his gill. He looked to have the frame of a 3 lb fish but had withered down to a pound or so because he couldn't eat. Of course we did him a quick favor and pulled it out before turning him loose.  Besides the bass, we also caught some crappie and a couple of other weird-looking fish. They looked like a combination between a perch and a crappie, 6-8 inches long, maybe a Roanoake bass?

wow, that's quite the freakshow outing!

I have never seen a fish like that last one. The front of it looks like all the rock bass that I have caught but the markings on the rest of the body are just odd...

Weird fish!

Sorry to hear about the rude anglers. I usually stay off the rez during tournaments.  Not because they have any more right to be there, but because I know there are going to be a lot of people out and the fish are going to be pressured. I think most of the tournament anglers are pretty decent folks though.

Nice bass too! The first looks to have been hit by a trolling motor. I've caught fish with similar scars.

I can't tell what the eyes look like....a rock bass will definately have reddish eyes.

The last fish looks to be a warmouth. Can't really tell, but this would be my guess. There are plenty of them in the reservoir.  Most of them have a decided purple hue to them, but I have seen all manner of varigated coloration.

so a warmouth is sort of like a rock bass? I've heard of them but I've never seen one.

Warmouth are common in in the south and also the Potomac in creeks that feed it. Greedy little aggresive fish that frustrate worm fisherman. There achiles heal is sneaky petes on a fly rod.
