4th of July float!

We had a flotilla at the Algonkian ramp this morning!

Unless I missed someone, these were the crews:

Ernie R.- kayak
Patrick C. - canoe
Steve C.- canoe w/ Patrick
Andrew D.- tandem kayak
Dan S.- kayak w/ Andrew
Bob M.- kayak
Charlie H.- his dad's home made boat
John H.- shark vessel
Charlie H. Sr.-  shark vessel
Jeremy- kayak
Jeff E.- in his jetboat
Mike- scanoe with his 2 sons

Bob Morgan getting ready!

Charlie and John Hill and their shark vessel!

Andrew Do and Dan Stroup getting ready with Andrew's tandem Hobie yak!

The start!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0130.jpg

It was nice to see everyone!

I know there were hundreds of fish caught! I am hoping everyone will post up their day on here.

My strategy was to head downriver and them paddle back upriver at the end of the float. Bob Morgan and went straight out and fished the push side of the last island. I went on the north side and Bob was on the south side. He picked the right side. I think he lost count after 15 smallies. I did have a decent flare up on the buzz bait but no takers. My 1st 2 fish came from a blue wacky Jack's worm. One of them was 12 inches.

I then went to the middle, on the MD side, and stated thring a tube. It didn't take long to hook up!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0131.jpg

Bob joined me and schooled me again....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0132.jpg

Jeff came by to say hi....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0137.jpg

And I caught a nice blue gill while he was there.....

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0139.jpg

I was fishing a ledge in the middle and I caught a few more including a 12.75 incher that I did not photograph because I was busy admiring the eagle!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0134.jpg

Then I got a nice hookup but it did not behave like a smallie....'cause it wasn't!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0140.jpg

What is this large mouth bass doing in the middle of the river?

I then headed to the VA side of the river but all I got were tons of nibbles and false hookups....and a nice show from the eagle!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0142.jpg

It was a great day and we were spared the jet skiers until after 11 AM!

Happy 4th everyone!

Re: 4th of July float!

Thanks for the idea/organization of this float, and nice to meet you (finally) Ernie.  Nice to meet you to0 Bob.  We went west from the ramp and stayed south of the islands, motoring nearly to the western tip of Van Deventer, then floated back to the ramp from there.  We took out at ~9:30, right in front of Bob.
Thomas (our 5 y.o.) was the first to hook up, using a white power grub. He thought it was a snag, but it was our biggest fish of the day: a 1-13 LMB.  He didn't want to hold it, so I had the honors.

http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu181/mudkart/fish/2009/tlmb.jpg

We caught 9 more bass, all on wacky rigged Yum dingers, and all smallies.  Nothing big, most were in this range.

http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu181/mudkart/fish/2009/mesmb.jpg

And one very aggressive sunfish, compare to the bait on my lap (4" dinger).

http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu181/mudkart/fish/2009/lesf.jpg

I had the boys using these Gammy wacky heads: they are still pretty "busy" with their worm fishing, and these seemed to help w/ hookup ratios versus circle hooks.

An excellent start to Independence Day.

Re: 4th of July float!

Andrew and I stayed on the water until about 1pm. We went up river, fished along one island and caught a few fish right off the bat. Andrew was catching them on a Cicada lure like crazy. I caught one on a walking bait. I started throwing a shallow crank and caught a smallie followed by two LARGE pumpkinseeds. Then we went up to the end of the island and got out to stretch our legs. We fished from the shallows and caught a bunch of undersized smallmouth that were chasing baitfish. Andrew used a fluke to catch a bunch. I was trying to stay down at the bottom by using a Yamamoto Flapping Hog on a shakey head jig. We tinkered around that island a while and ended up catching a few and then floating back down the Virginia side of the island. We started pitching and casting soft plastics into the fallen timber in the shade and caught 3 or 4 fish in like 2 minutes. We did a few passes down that side of the island and ended up getting snagged a lot and picking off fish here and there. Then we started heading back to the ramp and Andrew caught 2 or 3 smallmouths between the islands and the ramp out in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere.

Andrew lost a sandal to the muck at the boat ramp.

We both ended up with double digit fish, mostly small. Andrew had a smallmouth that went almost a lb and I managed a largemouth that was 2lb+ out of the timber along the island.

Fish were caught on topwaters, crankbaits, soft plastics, and jigs.

Did he take other pair of brown sandals that were on the west bank?

Re: 4th of July float!

I put my dad's boat in right when everyone else was taking off.  I motored to Goose Creek and fished the first 150yds.    I fished the tree that I always fish in Goose Creek.  I found it on the fourth of July Float last year and have caught fish their every time that I fish Goose Creek.  I caught two lmb.  The first was a lb and the second was just shy of 2lbs.  I then caught a few smallies in that tree and on my float out of the Creek.  I then hit a few spots on the way to my next "float" and caught a few smallies.  My next "float" was down Seldens Creek(I think that's the name), which is the stretch on the VA side from the second island up from Algonkian.  I floated all the way to the ramp.  I caught a few smallies, then I switched from a wacky worm, which I was using pretty much the whole day, to a panther martin.  I then caught a ton of bluegill and little smallies.  I then motored to my dad to get the gas card so I could get more gas for the boat(almost gone) and then headed in.

The biggest fish was the lmb that was just shy of 2lbs.  I had only two lmb.  I had a bunch of bluegill (good size ones too) and lots of tiny smallies.  My biggest smallie was 12.5".

Re: 4th of July float!

I was glad to finally match some faces and names, this Pacemaker site is a great little fraternity. You guys and these excursions are the reason I just HAD to have a kayak. I'd sit here on the other side of the beltway wishing I could be a part of your floats. I've been able to join up on the last two trips and I didn't know anything legal could be this much fun.

Started off yesterday by following Ernie. I fell behind a little when I saw some branches sticking out of the water short of the downstream island.  Threw an old propeller surface plug and had a blowup on my first cast. Threw back and managed to hook up with a shorty on the next try. By this time Ernie was working the tip of the island from the MD side, so I chose to fish the other side where there was some shore grass out into the water. The bottom was gravel and only about 12 - 18" deep, but there was plenty of bait around. I had two blow ups on the surface lure, hooking one, then switched to a gulp curly tail grub on ultra lite. The grub was exactly what they wanted, and I hooked up on nearly every cast. I stopped counting at 15 landed. Over the rest of the morning I landed 10 or 12 more smallies and a lone long eared sunfish. Ernie continued down river and I decided I didn't want to paddle a long way against the river, so I hung around the island. I found a few little pockets of fish coming up the VA side of the island, mostly where there were minnows skipping along the surface. After a little breeze started to come up I moved back closer to the ramp. Finally ended up fishing below the upper island where Patrick and Steve started off. After landing a few more I decided I'd better get off the river while the ramp wasn't crowded.

I was glad to meet all of you and I love catching those smallmouths. When's the next trip?

You large mouth bass guys are getting it done! BTW, in smallie fishing lingo, they usually measure in inches.

Jeff's 20 incher last week is ciation size or C-class in smallie lingo. A 16 incher is considered a serious fish!

I like to use lbs because I think it gives a better picture of a fish's size. I used to catch lots of 18-20" fish down near Fredericksburg but most of them were skinny and in reality weren't that big of fish when compared with something like the 19"-just under 3lber I caught at B'dam. They were similar lengths but the one at B'dam was a much better fight and was much heftier.

I might be a largemouth guy now but I started my fishing in the rivers of Virginia going after smallies.

Re: 4th of July float!

I caught 8 bass, 1 on a fake minnow, and the rest were on a wacky worm.  I caught all of them by the tree that's in the middle of the river.(near the boat ramp)  My dad caught 3 on flukes.  It was really fun, thanks for organizing it!

Re: 4th of July float!

Sorry for the delayed report and it will be incomplete until my bro-in-law sends the photos over. We launched a little later than everybody around 615 and paddled pretty much straight over between the two islands. I was fishing with a small fluke, beetlespin, and wacky worm while Steve fly-fished with a variety of lures whose names I can't recall.

Together we landed 15 fish total in about 3 hours of fishing. We had 11 smallies and 4 bluegills. A couple of the smallies I landed were pretty solid, but I had one nice keeper that measured 15in and weighed 1lb 5oz according to my scale. I caught it on the beetlespin on 4lb line and fought it for about a minute before it tired and I was able to belly lift it in the canoe. Picture to come, but it was a beautiful fish.

Thanks for the organization, canoe, paddles, and lifevests. Next time do you wanna supply the drinks, tackle, and fishing tips Ernie?! haha

I always have extra water on my yak......and I have tons of tackle that I don't use.....but I am not sure if I am the guy you want to be asking about tips!

One of the places that I used to fish back in the mid 80's is now a gravel bed! There used to be a few nice holes there where I often plucked out a nice fish or two. Being a river, it changes constantly. As an example, there used to be a little island behind the island that is directly right of the ramp.....it is not there anymore.

Re: 4th of July float!

Here are my pictures from the float.

Most of the fish were of this size:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/andrewdo124/fishing/2009/photo.jpg

This being my biggest:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/andrewdo124/fishing/2009/photo3.jpg

Started off the morning using the lure that tore it up last year:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b181/andrewdo124/IMAGE_047-1.jpg

But with all the baitfish action in the shallows I switched to a silver/white fluke and a grey/blue/black fluke weightless and caught quite a few with that. The biggest of the day came off a fluke while wading. A few of the fish tried to use my legs as cover which freaked me out!

I tried a tube later on and hooked up with a few but nothing picture worthy. As the fishing slowed I switched to a white road runner and caught 3-4 in 5-6 cast as we were approaching the launch.

Great day of fishing and look forward to going back. It was nice to meet a few new guys as well!
