Fished the Salmon River from a drift boat. The guide I hired was extremely knowledgable and made for a great trip. It was snowing and bitter cold, but we still managed 5 steelhead to 13.5 lbs and a 3lb brown trout between four of us. It certainly was an awesome trip to fish Feb and not having to beg the wife to let me go on a bluebird day was priceless.

half hour north of Syracuse, NY. It was amazingly cold. Ice formed on the guides, rob and me:) Fished the 25th up there too and got another steely ~8-9lbs and a domestic rainbow in full bloom, 2 red stripes and red apple cheeks.

A lot of Fly Fisherman go. G. Bush Sr. fished it about 4 years ago. They closed a section of river so he could buggy whip fish. People weren't to happy about that, Salmon fishing is a disease with some people.
A lot of deep holes 7-8', so during winter they hold up there and you gotta get deep fast. Other than that when the fish are moving you got a chance at them anywhere. Its really a different kinda fishing though. If you don't use a guide the learning curve is very hard. Guides up there are fairly cheap ~100-$150 a person. I used a guide the first 2 times about 7 years ago. Money well spent considering I average about 5 fish a day now, and when the run comes through triple that number. Also a consideration is a guide will take you to spots he knows are a little more secluded because it gets worse than opening day of trout up there.
Kings size is 15-40lbs, most are about low 20's and a 40lb fish are there they just really can't be caught by most anglers. Smaller surrounding tributaries fill up too. Nothing like seeing a big fish in a ankle deep creek.
Salmon River, Pulaski NY is the place for those interested. Be advised, the are trying to get rid of snagging of these fish, read the rule book. The "true" fly fisherman are usually left alone.
