Josh (L1Ranger) set us up with a nice trip at Elk Springs Resort where we learned to fly fish and catch trout.
After a four hour drive, a delicious lunch, and settling into the hotel we got to start FISHING! We each had someone help us to learn to fly fish and learn to catch the fish.
We started on a private little creek with a lot of trout.
Terry helped to teach my brother, Taylor, to fly fish.
He hooked into a nice trout.
One of his 9 trout on the private creek.
Allan helped Patrick learn to fly fish.
He hooked into a nice trout.
One of his 18 trout on the private creek.
Robbie helped Daniel learn to fly fish.
He hooked into a nice trout.
One of his 10 trout in the private creek.
Chris helped me learn to fly fish.
I hooked into a nice trout.
One of my 13 trout in the private creek.
After hours of fishing in the private creek we did some rock flipping to learn how to identify flies with John. We learned a lot doing this!
We then went and fished Elms creek.
Robbie helped Daniel fish in the Creek and Daniel ended up catching a trout.
Chris helped Taylor in the Creek.
Fishing the creek.
We had to do some crazy wading to get to where the trout are.
Had to fish in wooded areas.
We then went to the cabin, built a fire, and had hot dogs with Josh and his dad while taking trips to the fly shop, which was 30 seconds from the cabin.
After playing some poker, we headed to bed and woke the next morning at 5 30 and we were on the water by sunrise.
I caught a trout on my first cast and my brother on his second.
We then split up and fished for three hours. I had 2, Patrick had 1, Daniel had 1, and Taylor had 2 on the creek. It was so cold that the eyes on our rods froze over and the reels would freeze up so you had to dip it in the water to unfreeze it.
Before we left Robbie took us up to where the water that supplies to Elms Creek comes out of the ground after a 6 mile journey underground through limestone caverns. It causes for some very clear water.
What we learned:
-to cast regular and to roll cast on a fly rod
-we learned to catch a fish on a fly rod. This is more difficult than it looks...I must have lost a dozen flies doing this.
-we learned where the holes were in the creek with some very wet experiences
-we learned how to tie different knots
-we learned how to flip rocks and where else to look for flies, so you can decide what to put on your line
-we learned all about fly fishing and had a great time doing it
Thanks to Josh for setting us up with a great trip with some very nice people! Thanks to Josh and his father, Chris, Allan, Robbie, Terry, John, and the Elk Springs Resort staff for helping us all learn to fly fish! They are all very nice! We had a great time and we suggest this trip to anyone who is interested in fly fishing! We are already talking about going back this summer and/or next year!

Outstanding! You guys are really expanding your fishing knowledge.
Now go fix those pictures! You need to fix them on your hard drive before you bring them in tho Photoshop. I don't want to get sued for neck problems!

BTW, that picture of Daniel casting....perfect loop!

I really enjoyed it and it would have been even better with some more people.
As it was, I spent most of my time saturday walking around and checking in on everybody as Chris, Allan, Terry and Robbie kept them casting and catching. They sure kept Mr. Hill busy as the official photographer!
I think the official temps each morning were in the teens and the water froze on the guides and reels pretty quickly. Of course, by the time it warmed up sunday, it was time to head back to Virginia, but the weather couldn't have been better on saturday afternoon. Not too hot, slight breeze and hungry trout.
Maybe you can talk Ernie into given a fly fishing symposium on the ABC lakes. He might even be able to convince me to come help out

DONE!! Let's make it happen!
I have several friends who would relish the idea....they are very accomplished casters and tiers.
We could call it........Cedarfest!

Because of Tully, my Sunday afternoons (2 hours) are now booked with coaching BRHS Inline hockey (no bigfoot and we could use him too!). So....it will have to wait until after June 14 or we could try it on Memorial Day Sunday (5/24).

Thanks Charlie, for a great story and cool pictures. Normally this would be where I would make some remark about a bunch of guys moving toward the dark side (fly fishing). Instead I can't help admiring a bunch of young guys choosing a good path to travel and then finding the right older guys to help them travel along that path. Congratulations to all of you on that path and I hope your journey lasts a lifetime.

If you guys ever decide to have Cedarfest, I would certainly like to take advantage of any tips or lessons I could get. I'm not as young as some of these other guys who are just getting into fly fishing but I can see they are leaps and bounds ahead of where I am because of the help they are getting from learning from experienced fly fishermen.

I forgot about that. I will get back to you.

Sounds like a fun and educational trip. So are you going the way of the flies or are you going for LMB in your career as a professional angler?!

I caught that one with a panther martin spinner.
