John Casale called me and wanted to know if I wanted to go fishing with him on his boat on Saturday morning (1/6) since it was going to be in the 60s (and I am without a boat). Only trouble was that I was a bit under the weather but.....”let's go”, I said!
We were on the water n the Potomac River by 7:45 AM and by 8:00 AM we had lines in the Washington Channel.
It was a little foggy but beautiful out.
On our 1st pass, one of the rods went down but the fish got off. Our excitement diminished as we fished for 3 hours without another single takedown. So we went up a little further in the channel and as the tide went slack at 11:00AM, we got a hit and were able to bring in a nice, healthy and fat 19" striper. The skunk is off and we have our 1st striper for 2007!
A few minutes later, a cool thing happened. One of the DC water cops came over to us and wanted to check us out. As he got nearer, we talked to him a bit ad he recognized us and told us to have a good day. It seems that Curly got checked 4 times last Sunday and they were sick of seeing him!
About 30 minutes later, we get a bigger hit and a fatter and bigger (21.5") striper gets boated.
We had said that we would quit at noon and at 10 of, we managed to land a very nice large mouth bass that weighed in at 4.5 lbs (19"). In the live well he went as he will spend the rest of his life in Cedar Lake, Ashburn, VA.
As we drove back home, we couldn’t believe that we had been fishing on January 6 with temperatures nearing 70!
Nice way to start the year!
