11-8-08, Choptank River report

A little over a year ago, I won an auction at a CCA banquet to go out with a certain Captain for a day of fishing in the bay. The Captain sold his boat and did not buy a new one so it looked like I was out f luck. I called the folks at CCA MD and told them the situation and they offered to give me a refund. I told them that it was not necessary to refund me as that was not my intention...I wanted to fish with someone who could teach me a bit more about shallow water structure fishing!

So....they offered my a trip with Sherman Baynard who has been fishing the bay area for many years. He also happens to head up a fisheries commission in MD. I didn't know anything about Sherman so I asked a few friends what they thought of me fishing with him. They all said not to worry that I would be in for a treat!

So today, George Lenard and I fished with Sherman. We met in Fairfax at 5 AM (in the rain) and we headed over to Sherman's farm in Centerville.... Maryland. We got there at 6:30....

After a quick breakfast stop, we headed over to the Bellevue ramp on the Tread Avon River. As we headed out of the river, we hit a few shallow water spots....but before I go further, I should say that Sherman has a very nice Mako 17 footer and that we collectively decided to fish shallow water structure. We were not going to troll or hit any deep water spots. But....he feared that the fish were on the move to deeper holes (where the bait was) and that the shallow bite was over. The trip was designed as a tutorial. And THAT it was.

Sherman took the smell of the boat with this sub legal striper!

Then....it started to rain....

but George got hot and landed a nice keeper (one of 3 for the day)

It rained most of the morning with only a few let up but the weather improved as the day progressed. Sherman showed us many unique qualities of the Choptank including many submerged seawalls that one would never know they were there. They were very fishy and we picked off a few fish from there.

Unique way to stack tires.....

George and I fished the same lure most of the day, his Specialized Baits Li'l Jimmy!

Sherman fished the same chartreuse Bass Assassin all day....he caught 4 stripers.

Heck of a crew....heck of a day!!

The best part is that Sherman invited me to go fishing with him for white perch next year. He says they catch 10-13 inch perch all the time!! Did you hear that Carl????

Fishing with Sherman was indeed a treat!
