I am frustrated because I can't keep the registration open due to fishing spammers. I don't know how to stop them. It would be nice if I had to approve every new registration but I can't do that (at least I don't know how). Once someone registers, I get a confirming email and I can usually tell if they are legit or not. The problem comes in when I am away and can't watch what's going on.
Any ideas or suggestions?
I know of at least 3 people that wanted to register but don't want to go through the hassle of letting me know so I can be on line at the same time.

The hassle is in the timing....I am not always available.....plus the instructions are so teeny.
What/who is a webmaster? This is a free forum, I have no clue who they are. I am sure that a very computer savvy person could get this figured out but the "rules" don't allow for what I want. I would hate to switch up forums at this time.

Been there and done that....I have checked under every nook and cranny.....I don't want to leave it open while we sleep.

Is there any way to make more than one admin? Perhaps someone you trust so that they could also approve of registrations while you're away.

You may also want to consider using some sort of user management. You might be able to use more stringent joining requirements for potential new users. You can talk to the folks at "PunBB" for these. It would curb the automatic registrations. Regardless, you should see what it takes to get approval authority for all prospective users prior to the activation of their account.
You may also want to remove users who have not provided any comments for a certain period of time (say six months).

Curly is an admin but I really want better control. I emailed Cory (built the site for me) and he is going to see what he can do about the controls. Once I get that done, I can open up registration. I just don't want to take any chances with the porno spammers.
Earlier, I had a lot of "pill" spammers but more recently, we had the ugly ones. Not good for us or the younger members of teh site.

Got it figured out! The registration is open again. All new members will go into a "non post" manner until I verify and release them.

Update- the FORUM has received nine new registrations since I put the new system in place. All were bogus but I was able to catch them all before they posted any junk. In fact, a new registration cannot post until I let them.
So...if you know anyone that wants to register, tell them it's open.

So far, we have not had one legit registration....but @20 bad guys have tried to get on. No, no, no....no bad guys! The process to register is easy.
