10-3 & 4-08 Chesapeake Bay report

I fished with Rob Allen on Friday and Saturday out of Rob's 20' Grady White. This boat is over 20 years old (new 150 HP motor) and looks and runs great.  We stayed at Rob's cottage on Mill Creek which feeds in to the Patuxtent River which feeds in to the Chesapeake Bay.

We fished Friday morning from 8 AM until noon. The weather was spectacular! High pressure, calm winds and no waves!

Rob got the skunk off the boat with a decent blue and I followed a few minutes later with a blue of my own . Then, Rob got a keeper striper…..

We caught quite a few blues and they were of a nice quality as evidenced by this one that I caught….

Can someone ID this boat?

This was one of the feisty blues….they fight hard and DO NOT like coming up to the boat.

We then went on in to run a few errands and get some lunch.....at Stoney's which has a reputation for great crab cakes. Yes....they were good....all 1/2 pound of it. Incredible crab cake!We went back out in the afternoon and ran up to the gas docks but we only caught a few so we decided to head back south and try Cedar Point rocks and all I could catch was this hound fish….

That’s the second one I have caught, the last one was at Swan Point in 2006. Towards the end of the day I managed to get a striper but he was not quite big enough.

At one point, we were fishing next to Capt. Greg Buckner of the Miss Susie. We had a nice chat.

Saturday sunrise!

The weather was different today as we had an n east wind and 2-3 foot rollers….rough! Here is the melee; everyone chasing the birds to catch blues. The picture was blurry ‘cause the boat was a rockin’!

I had tried to catch fish on Saturday using a fly to no avail. There was no way I was going to be able to do so on Friday with the wind and waves. But…..Rob made a suggestion and I got a blue on the fly!

Staying at Rob’s was nice….his boat is on a lift so it’s easy to get on the water. The best of all is that I didn’t have to clean up my boat! But it was a pleasure fishing with Rob...he is a great boat handler and fisherman!

We had three fishing trips in 2 days. In total, we caught 1 hound fish, 3 stripers, 25+ little blues (less than 1 pound) and a dozen bigger blues (3-4 were around 4 pounds).

Hey buddy, thanks for the get well card. My surgery was on my left shoulder; since I am right handed I should be able to cast OK. Now, did you remember to ask about the white perch and the deep water at the Solomons Island bridge? Do they hold up there in the winter? When you guys were fishing did you try casting to the sand bar at Point Patience at the bridge?

Re: 10-3 & 4-08 Chesapeake Bay report

Carl,

We were out in the bay, always in 12-30' of water. we did not do any shore fishing. We were plucking the bigger blues from the bottom.

We did not talk to other fishermen but I will find out where those perch migrate to. As soon as I get some time, I will dig out some old reports and post them here.

Keep getting better.
