4-29-24, "O"

Normally, I don't worry about catching numbers at the "O" in late April. But based on our recent activity, I was afraid that the fish were running out of the river and back to the ocean.

While on the way to the ramp, after a breakfast sammie from Mickey D, I told Leon and George that I was not hopeful for numbers today. I was confident that we would catch them but...

They didn't care about what I said, they were happy to go.

Once there, we ran into Capt. Rich Johnson of Osprey Charters and he told me he caught some on his guided trip on Sunday afternoon. There's hope!

Also at the ramp were friends Ted and Mark but they were going down river to try some bass fishing.

We headed up and not a soul to be seen on the water? Good or bad omen?

We decided to go up pretty far and we had constant action for the next hour or so!

I got the skunk off and the boys followed.

Then we saw this guy!

He even made an inspection pass over us at one time. It was impressive. I wish I had my big camera with me. He hung around for most of the morning.

We caught some more including a double!

I'm pretty sure that was big fish for the day.

The action slowed to a halt (we had caught 33 at this point) around 9:30a so I decided to go down below.

There, we caught 2 fish and only a few bumps so I got impatient and went back up. It turned out to be a good move!

More catching!

I then told the boys that we were going to go all the way up by the rocks. Something that I really haven't done in a while. There was a lot of scum and I told Leon that they were hiding under it. The next second, he hooks up!

So we  all bought into the theory and proceeded to catch a bunch more.

Finally, it was just after noon and we were getting hungry. I said last cast and Leon proceeded to catch the last fish...number 62 for boat for the day!

I was stoked and slightly shocked but we did well. Much better than expected!

On the way out, I told Rich that we left them biting under the scum. He would report back later that the tip saved his trip and they caught about 25 under the scum. Who would have thought it?

Lunch was great! George and I had the double patty melt with grilled onions and Leon had the hot dog. Great as always but we were too hungry to get a pic! lol

We never felt any heat out on the water despite the fact that this is the 1st warm day of fishing for us. The water hit 64dF so the slight breeze kept us comfortable. It was down right warm when we pulled the boat at the ramp!

Great time with the boys, as always!

Had a blast today.  Not only was the fishing much better than expected, but the bald eagles & osprey's were fishing next to us.  Awesome to see them flying above the water and sight fishing

Still full from lunch and I brought most of the fries home for the wife.  It wasn't coconut cake, but still she likes them.

Even got to pull the tools out at the end of the ride home.

Thx again Skipper.

Forgot about that. I put both seats on the back of the boat so that George and Leon could fish downstream. I rarely use those two particular seat post holders and when it was time to get going, I could not get them out of the holders. I said screw it, and put the cover on. After thinking about it, I asked George if we could take a few minutes to try to pry them loose. Engineer George got the solution in his head and came out with a pipe wrench, a hammer and a crowbar. In no time, we had the posts out of the holders! Job well done!

Oh, regarding what works. That last picture shows a bare (multi colored) Gitzit jig. The rubber tentacles had been destroyed by the fish. I bet I caught 3-4 shad on the bare jig. Lots of color, no glitter.
