4/12 Trout Fishing at Quantico

A local fisherman I met (retired Army) asked if I would go with him to Thompson Lake up there near Front Royal on Friday.  But the weather forecast was a little sketchy and he had a change of heart.  We met instead at Quantico and enjoyed the comfort of my truck awning as we waited for the rain to stop.

As the morning started clearing up, I decided to take a walk up the stream and found the fish.  Ended up with 5 caught (including a crappie) and 1 released at the bank (we'll call it a natural release as it escaped while trying to put it on the stringer). One nice brown and the rest rainbows.  I think this does it for me for trout fishing and I'm stocked up for the year for smoking (making deviled eggs with smoked trout next week!).

Actually ended up catching a turtle that came off easily and then realized they were sunning themselves across from me.

And, finally, the feelfree lure went to a new home on Saturday down at lake anna.  I gifted it to a friend and he'll use it in his cove for fishing and his wife is looking forward to using it too!

Nicely done.

FYI, if you're talking about the same lake Thompson I am you might want to call DNR about it.  I believe it has lost water each year over the last few years so not sure how fishing is.  I know they release the trout and supposedly smallies in there. The lake Thompson I'm thinking of is off rt 17 near Sky Meadows State Park

yup, I think we're talking about the same place.  Right off Rt 66.  I was going to go there because I have family in Front Royal also and it gave me an excuse to stop by there too!  I'll definitely look into it.  Thanks!

Deviled eggs with smoked trout sounds really good!

Turtles are out in force right now. Yesterday I went to a local lake on my lunch break and watched a 5ish pound largemouth pick up a small turtle that wandered into its bed and gently carry it off and spit it out. Was super cool.

I've seen bass clean out their bed plenty, but I can't remember a time seeing them carry a turtle out! cool.
