Trying for October topwater Smallies

I got out from shore 3 times this week.  Two morning trips and one afternoon at 2 different parks.  The first outing was on Wednesday morning.  Despite having to fish around this stick/grass mat and a long branch next to it, I was able to cast to my spot.

I had several swipes and had one decent fish hooked for a second before it jumped and threw my little popper.  I did land one little fish, maybe 12 inches.  Was still cool on topwater.  All together I had 3 swipes/misses beside the two I hooked.  Bite died after sun got up.

Yesterday I figured I would try the evening bite after a warmer day at my local spot.  Nice evening, but waste of time with some kayakers, crew team and wind blowing leaves in the water.

Was looking forward to this morning at spot from Wednesday.  Got there early and got this guy on first cast.

Fun fight.  Got one more tiny bass on the popper.  Then the wind picked up and I got no more bites after trying various lures.  One thing of note.  I had put single hooks on the popper (front from last year and back one hand tied).  After missing the fish on Wednesday, I switched to a hand tied treble on the rear and I am pretty sure it made a difference as I did not lose any fish that bit.  Time will tell.  Anyway, fun stuff.  Leaves are falling now and grass is dying off.  Will be hard to work lure for a while now.
