7-26-23, Wicomico River

Today, it was supposed to be 3 of us, me, George and Leon. But Leon had to cancel because some piece of scum decided that he wanted his catalytic converter from his RV. I hope they catch the guy but as always, the victims have to pay and take time to make things right. We will make up the trip in late August.

I met George at his house at 5:45a and we took off for Chaptico Market.

And there sausage, egg and cheese sammies were as good as ever!

While there, we each ordered a bunch of bulk breakfast sausage which we would pick up on the way back.

It was a pleasant day and we stared catching fish at our 1st stop..and 2nd...and 3rd...and 4th...and 5th, until we ran out of time.

A spot!

A flounder (one of 3)!

A croaker (no pic)!

And many more perch...

... including 30-40 doubles!

We actually lost count of doubles! lol

At spot #4, White's Bar, we caught a ton of perch. The wind picked up a bit (against the current and tide) so we drifted out of shallow water (1.5'-3')  into deeper water (3' to 8'). I wondered if we would still catch fish as we drifted into deeper water. The answer was YES and they were a bit bigger. We did not stop catching them until we got to 8'. This was a "new" place for me and a very pleasant surprise.

After all the catching, I had to retire my lure (home made by George)!

We then went to spot #5 and I started  the drift a little further out than before, near a boat dock.

I threw in close and got picked up. All of the sudden, the fish started to run and I told George that I may have a striper. It ran under the boat and when I finally horsed it back out, I said, "George get the net!" It was a big perch!!

Just a hair shy of 12"! What a brute!

We continued to catch fish until I declared it was over at 1p! Chaptico Market lunch was calling!

Man...it was good! A fitting end to great catching and well worth the long drive. BTW, gas ain't cheap in MD either! mad

The wind was not a factor, the water quality was great, there were a bizillion perch and  the heat only bothered us when we put the boat up. Perfect day!

What an awesome day. Surprised you didn't get any specks or reds.

What lb test do you guys use for perching?

Also, is that head cheese in the last pic? I know what I"m getting next time I visit Chaptico Market.

I was tellin' George that we should have at least caught a red.

I use 8-10 lb braid with a 6lb leader. I think George used straight mono but he'll have to chime in

yep! Every time George orders it, they give him a funny look lol

I asked them about the stuffed ham pizza but that's for weekends only.

There's never a doubt about perch being in the Wicomico. They are always there in the summer. I've been catching them there since 1984 when Carl 1st took me.

However, getting the bigger ones is always a struggle. When I would spend more time on the water, I would head out to the Potomac (out of Shemansky's (4-5 mile run) and hit Swan Pt. There were some biggies there. It's a bit of a run (9-10 miles) from Chaptico Wharf).

I rarely eat fried chicken and when I do, I never eat the skin.

All of that goes out the window when I get theirs. So good!

Well Done guys.  Broke my heart to miss this trip.  RV converter installed and I'll be back on the road again.  Got hungry seeing the pics.  Cheers, Leon

Glad you guys got after the perch in the tidal waters!   Give those smallies a break...  The misses air fried blackened perch and salmon last night here, it was a bit hit over rice with everyone.  Blackened perch on tacos next.

Sounds tasty!

I have not kept a white perch in waaaay too many years.  roll

After a long day of driving to and fro plus fishing in between, I then have to put the boat away so I just wanna get home and take a shower.

The trip motivated me to try a new receipe.  Never made deviled eggs before
