July 11 at Quantico again

I decided to head back out to regain more confidence in my kayaking, so I went out after work for the out going tide at 4:30 pm.

It was a hot day, but not humid and hardly any wind.  The conditions were good for me and as everyone else was heading off base, I was heading in.

I get out on the water and within the first 20 minutes I'm into a a fish.  I took my eyes off the lure for a second and all I heard was a "pop" of the water.  I'm fishing for snakehead, so I learned from Capt Mike to let the fish eat the bait and do a countdown.  As a previous bass fisherman I would have immediately set the hook, but I've learned patience over the years and so the count began.  I took the slack out of the line and set the hook.

Immediately a large snakehead jumps out of the water like a dolphin does in a seaworld show.  I fought this fish for about 6 minutes before getting it close to the yak.  It barely fit my net and almost jumped out several times (and it broke my net too).  It took about 20 minutes before I could get it on the stringer and bled out.

The rest of the evening was uneventful with several bass chasers and more blowups, but my bad hook setting lost a couple more.  Regardless, I was thrilled to catch this one!  Pics of it didn't happen! lol

Also figured out that only the desktop version of imgur provides the bbcode....no wonder I struggled the other day!

The pause...the hit...the fight...the teeth...the smile!

Nicely done.

Amazing what lower humidity does to a hot day. makes a huge difference in feel.

Measured at 32 inches.  Didn't get weight but felt pretty heavy....they're like little logs!
